When building his green home, Fadell found a less than impressive selection of thermostats, even high-end options. He researched and discovered a properly programmed thermostat can add up to a 20% energy savings along with a change of merely one degree can cut energy costs by 5%. Approximately 50% of the home's energy bill is controlled by way of a thermostat. Why does it must be an ugly beige box around the wall? Using these facts and his engineering knowledge, he formed the Nest Labs and developed the Nest learning thermostat.

Aesthetic style and Hidden Functions Menu

Much like ipod and iPhone, Fadell adds a unique aesthetic style for the simple round dial made of good quality stainless steel rings which reflects the light and color around it. The rings act as a dial that may be turned right of left in order to manually adjust the temperature up or down. The main menu is cleverly hidden. To be able to access the key menu, the black button at the center is tapped and the menu illuminates. Recption menus includes an away function that allows for max energy savings once the user isn't at home. Fadell incorporated the mobile phone technology which allows remote access from an apple iphone or ipad app.

Learning Program as well as Savings

Rather than programmable program that only around 10% of consumers bother to set, he designed a more user-friendly interface learning program.
